about

During my residency at Bogong Centre for Sound Culture in December 2018, a number of double bass improvisations were documented. Recorded by Madelynne Cornish, the performances took place in two
very different acoustic environments: The cavernous hall of the dam regulating the inflow of water to Lake Guy and a narrow corridor in the Bogong Power Station.

Each track on this release presents a unique listening perspective on the intersection of two distinct ecologies; the sonic environment of man-made structures surrounded and inhabited by a quite vocal fauna, and that of the double bass, this low-frequency epitome of western classical music.

Recorded inside the dam hall, Dam has the microphones placed at a distance of about 15 meters away from the double bass, soaking up the many reflections and complex resonances of the space. Also recorded in the dam hall, in Frø, the microphones are placed inside the instrument using it as a filter for the choir of frogs and the sounds of the bass bow caressing the double bass body. Plant finds the bass and myself at the end of a tunnel in the power station, the microphones being placed at the entrance in the intersection between the sounds of the approaching dusk and the hum of the facility.

I wish to express my gratitude to Philip
Samartzis and Madelynne Cornish for the opportunity
to undertake the residency and especially to Madelynne
for doing such a stellar job of recording the music on
this album.

I acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the
land on which this music was made. I pay my respects to
their Elders, past and present.
